Re: Advice Columns
The question about the people dumping their dog normally would've been the most depressing one of the bunch, but then Prudie had to get a question later in the chat from a woman whose psychopathic nephew gruesomely murdered her dog, but the nephew's mom refuses to believe it or get him help. Three days later, and I'm still so upset about that letter.

Seriously. I kept on thinking in my head, "Future serial killer!" as I was reading that one... *shudders*
And I'm very grateful we avoided picket-topped fences when we put in a four foot tall one for our dogs (about the size of beagles, too!).

Re: Advice Columns
God, that first letter. My MIL did something similar when her older daughter moved out and left her cat behind. MIL decided that looking after the cat was too much trouble, so without a word to her daughter (who would definitely have tried to find the cat another home), she had him put down. Every time I think that maybe I'm too hard on my MIL, I remember that story and am filled with rage and loathing all over again.

Unless they were sharpened to the point of knife point, I don't even understand how it would be possible for a beagle to impale themselves enough to die on a normal picket fence. Seriously, that kid needs help.

Incestuous twin brothers wonder whether they should come out to their family. Um, no. No you should not.

Re: Advice Columns
I call fake. So fake. The dog killing nephew is one I hope is fake, but this one I'm pretty sure must be. Right? Please?
If it's not, then I totally agree, they should never ever say a word. Their parents would never come around to this. Never.

Re: Advice Columns
It sounds so fake. And a lot of the commenters also seem to be having trouble telling the difference between porn/fiction and real life. Pro tip: Anime is not a case study for incest in Japan.

That is....crazy. As well as the commenters who are seriously asking if there is twincest in the Harry Potter books.

Are they also gynecologists?
(Also, from a purely pragmatic perspective, incest seems like a horrible idea because if you break up, that's going to make holidays so awkward for everyone! Like, even more awkward than they're going to be when people realize you're dating someone who has at least 50% of the same DNA you do.)

This is so what I was thinking.

Holy crap. Who are these people who care SO MUCH about one person's decision not to change their name? Time to sic HR on these juiceboxes.
I changed my name when I got married, but I totally understand those who don't want to....it is a pain in the ass.

Re: Advice Columns
They changed her email address without her permission?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL! Not that introducing her under her husband's name to clients is good either, but at least she's there in person to correct them and keep it professional. But WHAT IN HOLY HELL makes someone think they can get IT to change your email address and then send it to all clients as updated?
This is one of those letters I really wish I could get regular updates on. I want her to sue every single person in that office that has allowed this to continue.

I agree that it is harassment. I wonder if the men are resentful in general that a woman has made it this far in their male dominated field (I'm assuming it is male dominated because she only works with men), and that this the manifestation of their resentment. Of course they should just put on their big girl panties and deal.

Re: Advice Columns
As I was changing my email address back to my maiden name, I got a lecture from the IT guy who informed me he would never marry someone like me.
Lucky all the women (like me!) who will never have to marry this tool. I hope she does contact a lawyer. What a bunch of assholes.

Also, where does she live that it's so outside the norm? I have friends from all over the country who didn't change their name when they got married.

Utah? The deep deep south? A company that could be anywhere and seems normal on the surface but is really full of insane bullies? I can't imagine anyone anywhere being that awful.
I wonder why the incest twin, if real, wrote to Prudie instead of Dan Savage or Cary Tennis. God, could you imagine a Cary response to that mess?

Kind of wish the incest twins wrote to Dear Abby, if only for maximum awkwardness.

I was reading this and kept saying stuff like Yes, goddammit. This is *exactly* the problem I have with my mother.

I saw elements of that in my own upbringing. My parents were children during the Great Depression, and they definitely impressed on me not to get my hopes up too much (in general), and that whatever you think you have can vanish overnight. Confidence and optimism were two things I grappled with (and still do, to some extent) in therapy.

Re: Advice Columns
Try to guess what this person is going to ask while you read through her letter. The actual question is not what you'd expect at all from everything previous.
(Sars's response doesn't take too long to cut to the actual issues at hand, not the wtfery of the question. Also, I learned the word "twunt.")

Re: Advice Columns
Damn, that was a long letter. I think she could've cut out a good two-thirds of it and still retained the essential message.
For no particular reason, that reminds me of when a guy wrote to Miss Manners about seeing a hot female cousin at a family reunion, and how good she looked in a bikini, blah blah blah. Right at the end he said "She used to be very heavy - would it be bad manners to comment on her weight loss?" Miss Manners' response was "My stars, you have NO idea what poor Miss Manners thought your question was going to be."

Dear Prudie: My daughter's teacher is a trollop.
My eyes are just rolling so far out of my head at the initial letter and her follow-up.

Oh, I'm not surprised. My mom (a high school teacher in my town. I had her for Chemistry)didn't shop at the local grocery store because our neighbors would look at what she was buying and remark about she could afford it and that if she could afford that food, they were paying her too much.
