He also had some awful comments about gay adoptive parents.

His comments about Joy Behar and Sherri Shepard make me think he's confused. The View actually isn't intentional comedy.
I also like where he comes with a long list of funny women and is like "but they're exceptions!"

Well I, for one, am SHOCKED that apparently The Man Show wasn't a teeming hive of feminist humor. Sad day that we womenfolk aren't allowed to take credit for "Girls Jumping on Trampolines".

He's also clearly never seen Sherri Shepard on 30 Rock, because her comic timing is impeccable.

Yeah, she's a good comedian. I remember first seeing her on that Sara Rue show (the name is escaping me). She was pretty awesome on that.

Yeah well. If Adam Carolla thought I was funny, then I'd have to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
This reminds me of something I saw on TV a few years ago, for the 1.5 seconds Carolla had his own call-in show on Comedy Central. People would ask him for advice, and this woman called about a problem she was having with her boyfriend. I forget what it was, but Carolla abruptly hung up on her after a few minutes, saying, "This isn't a thin woman's problem." Patton Oswalt was the guest, and he had to step in and apologize for Carolla's comment. It was low and disgusting, and it made no sense. Even if it was a 'joke', it was out of line.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
I hope this whole thing is actually a reaction to the increasing number of very funny women in comedy now. Like, "good things happened, so now there is a backlash from the idiots."

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
I disagree with Corralla: I can't stand Kathy Griffin.
Probably the dispraportion of men to women in comedy is more due to the fact that's it's been a unwelcoming environment. Not like being an unfunny guy is that much of a bar either. Gallagher and Jim Belushi made careers out of it.
Or it could be the same reason most serial killers are guys too.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
Female comedians get heckled ten times more than male ones, even if they are incredibly funny. I've seen it, and it's sickening.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
The whole 'why are there fewer female standups' question is interesting to me, and comparable to the issue of why there are so few prominent female chefs. Both are intensely competative careers in a world where ambition is still not seen as a ladylike attribute. I've read that boisterous behaviour in schools is actually rewarded among boys, whereas girls are actively punished for similar things. The career trajectory of your average comedian is so torturous that only people with the thickest skin would make it. Add to that the horrible misogyny that a lot of female comedians face - I'm not surprised there are so few. It seems to be changing though -albeit slowly.
Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
Yeah, one good thing about Carolla's comment is that it wouldn't have made the news if there weren't more female comedians around. Or something. I don't know, I'm trying to find a positive, here.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
Carolla's always been a misognystic, bitter, self-deluded asshole who excuses his ridiculous beliefs as humor. He goes on and on about his poor childhood and how he earned his fortune and how his family didn't demonstrate love to him. Even in the loveline days he was at best dismissive of women.
Comedians such as Pete Holmes and others have talked about how much more tough is it for female comedians because of the "women aren't funny" myth. And they've stated that any female comic who's been remotely successful has had to fight much more than any male comedian and deal with the sexism of why would a straight woman become a comic when they could stay home and make babies or some shit like that.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
Speaking of misogynists, this Globe and Mail article about Aaron Sorkin includes many great examples of his douchiness. (H/T to Cleo's Tumblr.) Just one key moment:
Hence, my first question starts, “I watched the pilot twice ... ” But I don't get to the question part because Sorkin looks as if he wants to say something. I invite him to do so, and he asks, “Because you liked it so much the first time, or because you didn't understand it the first time?”

I loved that article earlier. "Write something nice" — I bet the reporter enjoyed being not nice. I would've.

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
That whole article is just one long "Aaron Sorkin have you ever interacted with a human before?" example. So condescending and sexist and he just comes off like he has no understanding of how other people see him. Has he just so successfully surrounded himself with the adoring masses that he writes around the main characters in his shows that he has decided that everyone else is the enemy and he has to go on the attack immediately?

Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
I did tell a friend of mine who was at UCB that if I ever heard the words "One Woman Show" out of her I'd stage an intervention, but I don't think it was particularly misogynistic on my part because I would have hit Mambo Mouth era John Leguazomo with a truck if I had the chance.salamandersam wrote:Carolla's always been a misognystic, bitter, self-deluded asshole who excuses his ridiculous beliefs as humor. I agree it seems like the last stand of the meatheads in reaction to women making such a break through in comedy lately. Can we just get to the point of Molly Shannon being a crappy comic because she's unfunny and not because of being a woman?
And god knows my lower brain gets in my way too much and I'm appalled.
PS "chicks" what is this 1976?

I think my absolute favorite part was where he was like, "It wouldn't hurt you to pick up a newspaper once in a while," and she was like, "Uh, I write for one. That's why I'm here." In fact, I'm not even sure she said that out loud, just noted it in the article. She just let Sorkin be Sorkin and quietly recorded it all for posterity.
Re: Celebrity Dumb Quotes
My favorite part was this:
With one look into the steel arrogance behind Sorkin’s eyes, I am sure he considers his life’s tragedy that, in 50 years, there will be no Sorkin to write about him.

I'm having flashbacks to Kanye's biggest regret being that he would never be able to experience himself in concert. I'm not sure if Kanye ever said that though. It seems like something he'd say.
