I'm surprised there weren't any students who chained themselves to the statue in protest.

I saw on Twitter that what's unprecedented won't be the penalties so much as the punishment being doled out so swiftly. Usually the NCAA punishment moves as a snail's pace because of all the due process and appeals.

I just saw that as well - its not that unprecedented to lose scholarships and have a bowl ban, but it is to have it happen with no LOI, investigation, hearing, etc. and no appeals process, either.

I think they did it early sunday morning to avoid the protests.

Twitter has been amazing this morning, hasn't it?

The NCAA dropped the hammer:

• $60 million fine
• Vacation of wins from 1998-2011 (111 wins)*
• Four-year postseason ban
• Players may transfer and play immediately at other schools
• Athletic department on probation for five years
• * Note: Joe Paterno record now 298-136-3; fifth on FBS all-time list

I'm not really knowledgeable of NCAA sanctions and benefits. Is this more or less punitive than the death penalty?

I would say it's about the same or in some ways worse. On Twitter I've seen what the NCAA handed down referred to as "life without parole" or a "working death penalty". They won't be able to field a competitive football team for years and ripping away wins from Paterno has got to sting for the Penn State loyalists.

Less. SMU never recovered and a probationary team at least keeps money coming into the football program.

Asa side note, how stupid does Ped State's adminstration look for not throwing themselves on the sword now?

Heard about that. From the DirecTV ad. That was actually news to me.

Why does Seattle hate winning? Do we think we deserve to lose because of our crappy weather?

Your owner is Paul Allen. Take it from your neighbors in Portland, that's all the answer you need.

Seattle Seahawks, the Emo Teen of the NFL. I guess it's lingering depression over all those years in the Kingdome. Pretty soon they'll start dating Courtney Love.

Godell needs to get the real refs back.

When you're in a Chicago bar and the Bears fans are getting mad on behalf of Packers, the call was definitely crap.

Some of the replacement crews working now were fired by the Lingerie Football League due to incompetence.

I don't even follow football, or care about it much, but I'm following this thing for the DRAMA. And that is hilarious.

So have the Broncos got it together or do the Raiders just suck?

Thank god I didn't watch that game live.

Chiefs player Javon Belcher kills girlfriend then self.

Feels like there's been so much tragedy this football season.

In front of the coach and GM at Arrowhead? Are the Chiefs just supposed to play tomorrow? They weren't exactly good before but I don't see how their minds are going to be in the game on any level.

I keep wondering where Bobby "Easy Rider" Petrino will end up next. Maybe Colorado? They already had Slick Rick Neuheisel as their coach a few years ago, so it's not like they've never hired someone with plenty of baggage.

The Bielema move was definitely a shocker, though.
