Video Games
Generally I am an RPG player, though I will branch out with the fighting isn't too bad. I am terrible at first-person shooters, to a somewhat astonishing degree. I'm looking forward to a bunch of games in the next few months, starting with Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Uncharted 3. Oh, and I just picked up Dance Central 2 which is super fun! I need to use the Kinect more.

Re: Video Games
I've been dipping into Dungeon Defenders (developed by Trendy Entertainment) this week. It's flawed but fun, and a perfect way to keep myself busy until Torchlight II comes out. Admittedly I haven't done any random matching on TrendyNet--I've been playing solo or hooking up with players I know personally in private, ranked sessions.
Basically it's a Tower Defense/RPG hybrid with gorgeous graphics that aren't at all hard on my 4 year-old system. Solo gameplay is rather repetitive--I prefer to duo. It takes about 30 minutes to do a scenario and I find it easy to put down and pick up.

Re: Video Games
Disney Universe. The thought of Disney putting out a LEGO-like game that involves a bunch of franchise-crossover and cool costumes to unlock should be fun, no?
No. Which is sad. Because I really loved LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (along with all the other branded LEGO games). But Disney has stripped an already simplistic design down to even further bare bones. Each "world" is made up of three settings, and each setting is made up of three stages, and fundamentally they all play exactly the same. There's not even really an element of puzzle solving here, where you have to pick the right character to do something X before selecting another character to do Y because no matter what costume you select, they all play exactly the same. I read somewhere that each costume has its own power set, but so far what I'm seeing is each costume carries a club, and that club is used by hitting the X button (or square if you're PS3) and you can "level up", which changes the look of your club. But aside from the cosmetics of Iago carrying around a club that looks like a cracker or Tron carrying one that looks like an identity disc stuck on the end of a lightsaber, it's all the same thing.
I hate this current trend towards focusing on multiplayer. I get the sense that the game would be... well, not better, but more... if I had other players with me. But since I'm the only gamer in the house (or that I know in real life) that doesn't help me out. As it is, the single player campaign is tedium incarnate after only completing the first world Pirates of the Caribbean and unlocking the first stages of two others (WALL-E and The Lion King).
Insult to injury: there are two "guests" (costumes) to rescue in each setting, for a total of six in each world. But you can only rescue one at a time, which means you have to play all 9 stages in every world twice in order to rescue all the guests. Which would be fine if, like the LEGO games, going through a second time involved having the ability to unlock new and hidden areas you weren't able to access before, but no. They play exactly the same way, both times.
So much suck. It's a shame because the production values are great for everything but the actual gameplay.

Has anyone tried KOTOR on Steam on Windows 7? I just want to know if it all works or not. The disc version crashes when I go into the Dantooine crystal cave.

I need to know if anyone else has played Catherine, because for real, I CANNOT get through night five on normal. I have to put it on easy if I want to continue with the story. These puzzles are impossible.

Re: Video Games
Anyone else seen the Star Wars Kinect preview? The podracing looks good, but the highlight looks to be rancor mode! However, the dancing bit at the end seems to be on the dodgy side. But if anyone wants the music, here, then here.
Strangely, what you'd think would be the most exciting bit, being a Jedi, seemed rather average. Maybe if there's a duel mode or something... Only time will tell, I suppose.

Re: Video Games
Kinect doesn't really work well with things that involve moving a person around. They should probably work on better interaction between controller use and kinect. Like, I move with a controller but force choke with a gesture. Being a rancor and destroying things looks like fun though!
The state of my mind lately has been: Mass Effect? Mass Effect! Mass Effect, Mass Effect. Mass Effect.
The launch trailer, I am excite.

Y'know, I've decided against that game anyway. I saw this little freakshow. Yeah, that's really not my thing. I'm not sure it's anyone's thing.

Re: Video Games
I think dancing stormtroopers is awesome. I love it when Star Wars gets intentionally silly like that.
"I see a line... of... beautiful girls
Dressed as stormtroopers!
Each one a gem
With leather boots and whips on their hips
It's risque, dare I say,
S and M!"

Re: Video Games
Has anyone been playing Mass Effect 3? It was probably the game I was most looking forward to this year.
Major spoilers below:
Major spoilers below:
- Spoiler:
- OMG WHAT WAS THAT ENDING. I literally sat there stunned when that damn crazy-ass star child atrocity showed up. Oh Bioware, I loved your games so, what happened?! I've been following the change the ending campaigns online and I kind of understand the fans rage. On one hand, it is Bioware's story to tell but on the other this is a basically a choose your own adventure game and thus, the gamer shapes the story as well, so I get the anger at your choices mattering not at all at the ending. Because seriously, to me, this was an absolutly flawless game until the last 10 minutes. I'm not joking when I say that last 10 killed any desire I have to replay any of the Mass Effects. And honestly? I figured Shepard would die, just.......not the way it played out. The ending just made no damn sense and I am left wondering if they are trying to ring more money out for a sequel or DLC or something....

I feel you. I need to take a break from it for awhile, but there's enough there that I'm leery of Dragon Age 3. At this point I don't think I'll buy it, unless the reviews are good.

Re: Video Games
So, today I downloaded Neverwinter Nights 2, which macgamestore.com has for three bucks right now, because it's been YEARS since I dug into a good fantasy RPG. That was about seven hours ago. Whoops.
I still hardly know what I'm doing with the fighting, but I'm managing so far. I sort of woke up to myself giving my team a very serious post-battle pep talk-slash-reprimand ("Guys, that was really pathetic, we need to get it together, OK?"), followed by muttering an apology for looting some guy's house after kicking a bunch of bandits out of it, and I decided it was time to stop for a while.
I dimly remember something about homework I was supposed to be doing this weekend.
(And yes, I know this game is seriously old, but: I am cheap, I have a small laptop, I have unsophisticated gaming skills, and what I don't know I'm missing won't hurt me.)

Yeah, I feel pretty much the same way.

- 99% awesome 1% what the holy hell just happened? After finishing, I paced up and down our hallway for about 30 minutes (trying to process) until my husband made me tell him the ending. Then we both got angry about the complete lack of sense. It makes me sad because I replayed ME1 & ME2 four times each. Also how do writers that come up with such fantastic material as the genophage cure and the geth turn out that end?
IM, Never Winter Nights is a fun game! I have a few standby old games that I keep going back to.

Re: Video Games
I just finished Mass Effect 3...
- Spoiler:
- I am hugely disappointed and actually quite irritated by that ending. I found it both lazy and pretentious. It's really tainted my otherwise big enjoyment of, and affection for, those games. And if it turns out to just be a cynical ploy to get people to shell out for DLC, then I think Bioware will have shamelessly ripped off all their customers.

- Oh lord that was hilarious. I went from being devestated to crying with laughter. He tried to save us. Have you followed Marauder Shields twitter? It is a thing of beauty. As is HarbytheReaper. So do you guys think they'll change the ending? For me, even clarifying what the hell happened the last 10 minutes would be great. Why did Joker suddenly turn into a coward and flee the battlefield leaving Shepard? Why the hell were Garrus and Kaidan on that ship? Garrus would have never left my Shepard, he's the ultimate bro. Why didn't Shepard start shooting that horrible little starchild? Why did she buy everything that little asshole was saying? I reunited the Geth and the Quarians dammnit! The ending of a trilogy should not include "Lots of speculation for everyone!" Its like the hobbits finally got the ring into Mordor but instead of ending it, Frodo has to merge with Sauron and control the orcs except you never see what happens and it just fades to black. And then a demand for more money.
One of the rumors floating around is that the ending wasn't reviewed or rewritten by the rest of the writing team, that the head writer took over and didn't let anyone else help. That actually makes the most sense to me because the other 99% of the game was fun, well-written, funny, and very touching. Mordin's death and sacrifice make me cry, it was the perfect way to end his character (for me!) because he got to right his wrongs. Wrex and Eve were wonderful together, Legion's sacrifice made me bawl, and Garrus and the bottle shooting was awesome. How could this team of writers go so wrong so quickly at the end? At this point I won't purchase any of the DLC, because honestly, whats the point? Nothing Shepard did mattered at all. I can't decided if its worse that Bioware genuinely thought they came up with a great ending or that they left a cliffhanger because they want more money.
Although the scene with the old dude talking to that kid in the forest was funny because I had a Renegade Shepard who was a total asshole. So this Grandpa is telling the story of Shepard who banged his way through most of the Normandy crew, saved a serial killer just cause, let some civillians burn alive so two mercenaries could kill each other, murdered Mordin so he couldn't save the Krogan, randomly punches and murders people when they talk for too long, and commits genocide a lot. Yeah, tell me another Shepard story indeed, Grandpa.

Re: Video Games
Anyone else in either the Diablo 3 or the WoW Mist of Panderia betas? I got supremely lucky somehow and I'm in both, but neither are playable right now and I'm sad.
Diablo 3 is so much fun. SO MUCH. You get to make zombies explode with your bare hands! Crossbows that fire like machine guns!
MoP is super cute, and I have a low level monk panda girl that I really enjoy playing when the servers work, but there's a LOT to be done in that game before it's ready for everyone to play.

I was interested in Diablo 3 up to the moment they said it would be online only. I have better things to do with my connection than that. Besides, I often play games while waiting for a large download to complete. No thanks. I'm waiting for Torchlight 2, though.

Ha! I tried to play last night, and couldn't use my mouse to move. Something had gotten all funky and I just couldn't deal with it. Also, I'm stuck at progressing until they fix the gathering quests bug - it's really, really dumb that you have to finish every single quest in order to get to the next ones. Until I can gather some damn reeds, I can't do anything else.laddical wrote:there's a LOT to be done in that game before it's ready for everyone to play

Red Wolf , it is annoying that you have to be online all the time, even for single player mode. I don't intend to ever play with anyone else, so it's particularly galling. However, I really do enjoy exploding zombies.

I can see the appeal of that. But I quite enjoy levelling up the Torchlight Vanquisher and letting loose with the sentry guns. I hope there's an ability just as fun in TL2. Which I can play offline. :)However, I really do enjoy exploding zombies.
