Re: Star Trek Movies
Crazier thought. JJ Abrams is pretty damn media savvy, and they've been playing up this whole secret.
Is it possible-- is Abrams crazy enough-- that they actually made a foiler-cut of the movie? Just to fuel the spoiler/outrage machine?

Re: Star Trek Movies
I followed you through the crazy time lost Picard theory, but I'm afraid a "foiler cut" is a wank too far.

Re: Star Trek Movies
Yeah, true.
But, you have to admit, the studios have been desperately trying to get ahead of the Spoiler Machine that is the Internet, and that would be the the next logical step. And the person to do it would have to be an Abrams/Whedon/Nolan.

Commentary under the cut that includes a spoiler from Iron Man 3:
- Spoiler:
- So based on the true identity of the Mandarin in IM3 and working on the assumption that the Harrison=Khan thing is now confirmed.... we have the start of a trend. And extrapolating out, we can expect to discover in Man of Steel that General Zod is really Lex Luthor.
Also, I think someone at Paramount maybe got their memos crossed and WASPY motherfucker Paddy Joe Cumberbund was meant to play British thespian Trevor Slattery in IM3 and Indian Ben Kingsley was meant to play Khan.

Old Spock battles new Spock in the greatest car commercial of all time.
The levels of awesomeness on this are unbelievably hilarious.

Hee! That is indeed awesome! I especially like that Nimoy has such a good sense of humor about his presence in the cultural zeitgeist.

Re: Star Trek Movies
So, I saw Into Darkness this afternoon...
(Seriously, I am about to post enormous spoilers, click at your peril)
On a fussily small, non-spoilery note, I really appreciated how many of the background crewmembers were extras or small speaking parts I recognised from the first film. It really gave an amazing sense of continuity to the whole thing, and is the sort of detail a lot of films would just fudge over. I'll probably have way more to say about this film when I think about it some more.

- Spoiler:
- I can't believe he WAS Khan, after all their insistence that he wasn't. As soon as there turned out to be frozen people in the torpedoes, I called it. I thought it was pretty well done, but I'm still a little disappointed because I was looking forward to the big reveal of who the character was. Turned out it was just who everyone said he was in the first place.
Other than that, I loved it! Kirk's death scene was great in a horrible gut-punching kind of way. At least right up until the bit where Spock did the 'KHAAAAAAAN' yell, I laughed and I'm not sure that's what I was supposed to do. But real kudos to Quinto for his acting there, it was fantastic. For a brief moment I did think they were just going to straight up kill off James Kirk, then I remembered Khan's magical healing blood and realised what was going to happen. Weirdly, I was totally convinced Chekov was going to the bite the dust. I think it was the red shirt they made him put on.
Loved that there was so much Scotty, and Uhura's scene where she faced down the Klingons. I liked the Klingon redesign, but I imagine some quarters won't. It did seem as though they're setting them up to be the big bad of the next film.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I saw the major spoiler and well...
- Spoiler:
- I'm having a hard time reconciling the whole whitewashing thing. I think that the play coy with the marketing and then there was this makes me go "Fuck it." I'll probably only see one movie this month (damn getting away/childcare/babysitting) and I'm really not sure if I want to see this now or IM3.
I don't know if I want someone to talk me into this or talk me out of it. But I suspect Kiran also feels the same way too.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I say YAY as well,
I had a problem with the lack of women in the movie.
I've never seen Betadine Cuckoosnatch in anything, so I didn't know about The Voice, but wow. I also thought the movie was longer than what it was, I was surprised to see it's only about two hours. It's not that it dragged, but that there was a lot of...stuff.
- Spoiler:
- although the whitewashing is problematic
I had a problem with the lack of women in the movie.
- Spoiler:
- There were two women who had major speaking roles - both Star Fleet, and another two or three with one-sentence lines. Uhura mostly seemed to serve the purpose of doing the emotional 'housework', getting irritated at Spock's behaviour, getting moisty eyed every now and again, things like that. She didn't really do anything too important until towards the end, and even then it was minor. 98% of the important stuff was said and done by the male characters. There was also one ridiculous moment of awkwardly shoehorned-in fanboy service.
All that aside, it was fast-paced, explodey, action-packed, and lens flare-alicious.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I totally agree about the lack of women. If anyone's wondering, the brief moment with Alice Eve in her underwear is even more ridiculously awkward and unnecessary in the film than it was in the trailer.
I also agree...
I also agree...
- Spoiler:
- about the whitewashing. They've cast every other reboot character as the same ethnicity as the original, why is Khan suddenly a skinny white British guy? Especially sketchy once you consider he's supposed to be part of a 'superior' race.

Re: Star Trek Movies
This movie is going to have to practically be Avengers good (to me) to get back on my good side. The (spoiler) is annoying me that much.
I'll still see it. And I will try to keep an open mind. But...
At this point, if someone allowed me to time travel forwards to June 14 so I could see Man of Steel right now, but doing so would put me in a timeline where every scrap of film and computer data concerning Into Darkness had been destroyed... I'd do it.
I'll still see it. And I will try to keep an open mind. But...
- Spoiler:
- The only reason I can imagine they cast BC at this point is because they wanted to be able to play their bullshit games regarding his character's true identity, and casting someone of any shade darker than WASPY Motherfucker would have been too big a flag from their point of view. So all the games, all the petty fan-trolling bullshit... and in the end it's all for the laziest possible creative decision they could have made AND an incredibly insensitive bit of casting.

You're better than me Laddical. I'm still annoyed and not sure if I want to see it, even though the cast is stellar.

You are right that I feel similairly, Cute. Its sad because I AM A HUGE (albeit quiet) Star Trek fan but
- Spoiler:
- I'm also a Sikh. And I am taking this very personally. Its just gross. And its not like there aren't TONS of capable Indian actors, or you know that they have their OWN GIANT MOVIE INDUSTRY. OH WAIT. THEY DO. Ugh. Its just ...so problematic. There is no reason to cast the whitest man in the world to play that character. None at all. Yes, hes a great actor but guess what so is Naveen Andrews. AND HE HAS A RELATIONSHIP WITH JJ. NO EXCUSE.

What bugs me with the whole secrecy is that WE KNOW ANYWAY before going into the theater. Really I think the whole thing is a chickenshit way of avoiding backlash.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I went to see it this afternoon. I'd avoided spoilers but from what people were saying here and on Twitter and from what I surmised from a Tumblr gif set of John Cho being interviewed about the film, that thing I thought was going to happen actually did. I'd spoken to my mother about it the other week and when the reveal happened, the two of us looked at one another and shook our heads. It disappoints me for reasons that Cutebutpsycho and Kiran have mentioned and also I am disappointed for them as well.

I hope its not as much of a hot mess as Wolverine. I enjoyed that movie but mostly because of the hot men. Otherwise it was kind of a total hot mess.

Re: Star Trek Movies
No, I didn't mean it that way. I just meant that I went into Wolverine Origins with expectations of better but didn't get it and that's a bit how I feel about this sequel. It was actually the Star Trek film that matched those expectations that summer. I didn't find either a waste of my time though so there's that.
